Tranquillo Maria Laurentio Mollo (1767 – 1837)

was a Vienna based Swiss/Italian graphic designer, printer, art and music dealer and publisher. Nothing is known about his youth. After many years in partnerships he published independently from 1804. Under his own imprint, he became one of Austria‘s most important globe and map publishers. He collaborated extensively with English and French publishers to bring new material to his work. In 1832 Mollo passed the company to his sons Eduard and Floria but they separated three years after Tranquillo‘s death.

Map Details

The title of this scarce map and the name of the author are placed in the upper left corner underneath the inset of Iceland („Island“). In the lower right corner three small distance scales are to be found.

The map covers Scandinavia, the western part of Russia („Russisches Reich“), the Baltic region, Prussia („Preusen“) and northern part of Germany. It is very detailed with lots of names.

Information on Iceland is rather poor. There are only a few place-names along the coastline. The interior is nearly empty. The bishoprics Skalholt and Holar („Hala“) are depicted without church symbols. „Hekeler“ probably stands for the volcano Hekla.

The Arctic Circle is only drawn in Iceland but runs too far south. The island Grimsey is not depicted.
